Cross Current

Cross Current News January 2016

Friends— Happy New Year. 2015 was such an amazing year for Cross Current and it would never have happened without you. Your presence at our shows and your encouragement mean everything to us. Thanks so much to you all!

Highlights of last year included finishing what we are now calling “the first CD” and the wonderful release party so many of you shared with us. Rosana Costello joined the band, another highlight of the year, adding her rich sound to our music. We were honored to be part of many benefits, including the We Shall Overcome concert with the Low Tide Drifters. We owe special thanks to mentors and friends who have supported and helped us so much: to Brent Alan who coached and engineered us through the CD, and to the amazing musicians who added their talents to it. Also to Pete LaVelle, Dan Plaster, and KLCC radio, and Rockin’ Rome Hamel from KRVM for having us on air and sharing our tunes with their listeners; and to Beth Wood and Keith Greeninger for their ongoing mentorship and inspiration. Nathan and Kate and all the Drifters have also been our great friends and comrades on this musical journey. They all have our gratitude.

Now 2016 is beginning and a lot is already happening. Cara Brasted is joining us on fiddle as often as she can. We’ve got new songs and our new microphone Louise, and new gigs coming up. We hope you’ll join us at one of these next few shows. We’re looking forward to singing with you as much as we can this year.

Here’s the schedule for January:

Jan 9, Saturday, 5-7 Oakshire Public House 207 Madison St.
Jan 21, Thursday, 5-7 Sam Bonds Brewery 540 E. 8th

CD RELEASE SHOW May 22nd at the Avalon Lodge, Eugene

Going To Lift My Voice is the first album by Cross Current, an Americana duo uniting singer/songwriters Ken Zimmerman and Steve Gibson. The album features 14 original songs with themes ranging from love, friendship, and the natural world to social issues such as homelessness, ecology, and the struggles of working folks. Cross Current is rooted in the folk tradition of making songs that matter, while incorporating musical elements from blues, gospel, and rock to tell contemporary stories of struggle and hope. Cross Current came together out of the belief that music can make a difference in our lives and in our world. Going to Lift My Voice is an attempt to express that belief in song.

The songs:
1. Going to Lift My Voice (Zimmerman)
A new hymn to the redeeming power of music.

2. Seven Devils Road (Gibson)
A true story about a chromite surface mine on the Oregon Coast

3. No Place Like Oregon (Zimmerman)
In the summer time!

4. Broken Circle (Gibson)
How we treat others is a reflection of our society.

5. Fine Fine Fine (Zimmerman)
Finding hope when everything is going wrong

6. Poverty State (Gibson)
The homeless are part of us.

7. Gone To The Mill (Zimmerman)
An elegy for victims of industry

8. Carbon Footprint Blues (Gibson)
A new kind of green

9. I Love The Rain (Zimmerman)
That’s why we live here.

10. Devil’s Highway (Gibson)
A story of crossing into the US from Mexico. Based on the book by Luis Alberto Urrea

11. Sweet Adeline (Zimmerman)
Love found, lost, and found again

12. Sweet You (Gibson)
True love… with swing!

13. Another Song For Woody Guthrie (Zimmerman)
“because some things are worth repeating…”

14. Cast Your Bread (Gibson)
Together we can make a better world
